This week I’m talking with Kristen Jenson, mother of two daughters and one son, who is waiting for her in heaven. Kristen is an author and speaker who holds a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Organizational Communication, and lives with her husband and sweet dog in the beautiful state of Washington.
Kristen has endured hardship and tragedy, and walked alongside others as they’ve faced pain as well. And it was as she did, she identified a need to educate and prepare our kids when it comes to pornography. Because the truth is, it is not a matter of IF our kids will be exposed to pornography, it is a matter of WHEN.
As those who love our kids, we must be diligent in preparing them, warning them, and arming them with knowledge and truth. We must give them a plan–as ammunition–to not only know what pornography is, but more importantly, to know how to protect themselves from its dangerous effects.
Kristen travels and speaks about how to porn-proof our kids, and has written a children’s book entitled, Good Pictures, Bad Pictures, Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids. It is a wonderful tool which can be used as the catalyst to begin this crucial conversation with our kids. The book also offers a CAN DO plan for kids to follow when they are faced with exposure to pornography. And Kristen also has a SMART plan, to help children and families who have already been exposed or effected the devastating effects of pornography.
In this episode Kristen shares:
- The tragedy of her 18 month-old’s near drowning
- The unexpected role of caregiver for her disabled son
- The death and loss of her son nine years later
- The devastation of a neighborhood family wrought by sibling sexual abuse
- And how that led to her passion to protect kids from pornography and write a book to help parents help their kids
Kristen and I discuss:
- Grief, loss, and guilt
- Enduring through adversity
- Tips for those who find themselves as caregivers for a sick or disabled loved one
- And ways to prevent burnout as a caregiver
Kristen explains:
- The prevalence of pornography
- The high probability that our kids will be exposed
- How pornography has changed and become so dangerous
- How the research is showing that pornography damages our brains and is as addictive as drugs or alcohol
- And other ways it is a danger to our kids
Kristen also explains:
- The contents of her picture book, Good Pictures, Bad Pictures
- The CAN DO plan, to help warn, prepare, empower and educate our kids when they become exposed (because the issue is not IF, but WHEN)
- And the Help and Heal SMART plan, to help children and families who have already been exposed or effected by pornography
I’m so thankful for Kristen’s expertise and dedication to empowering our kids, and know her book will help us protect our children and families.
